JERSEY CITY MEALS ON WHEELS

Our Home Delivered Meals Program serves between 800 and 1000 housebound seniors daily, including weekends, for a total of over 250,000 meals served each year.  Please note that applicants must meet specific program requirements in order to be eligible for service.  Service includes the delivery of a frozen meal per day once a week Monday through Friday.  For more information, contact Jerome Colwell, Project Coordinator, at (201) 547-6808 or (201) 547-6809.

Jersey City Meals on Wheels is a program designed to enable homebound and disabled seniors to remain in their community with independence and dignity.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must reside in the area of Jersey City.

  • Must be age 60 years or older.

  • The individual must be homebound; i.e. does not leave his or her house under normal circumstances.

  • The person must be generally unable to get to a congregate dining site where lunch is served.

  • The individual must not be attending an adult day care center where a meal or meals are served daily.

  • The individual must be unable to obtain food (go shopping) or prepared meals.

  • The meals available would not jeopardize the health of the individual.

  • The individual must be able to feed him/herself and reheat the frozen meal.

  • The individual must be home to receive the meals when delivered.

How It Works

  •  A nutritious meal is delivered directly to your home.

  •  An effort is made to deliver the meal at approximately the same time each day.

  •  This well-balanced meal provides one-third of the recommended daily nutrients your body needs as an adult.

  • Meals can be heated in the microwave or conventional oven

 Individual Responsibility

  •  You must be home to accept your meal delivery and make contact with the driver.

  •  Your driver cannot leave your meal without knowing that you are safe.

  •  If you have a doctor’s appointment or will be away, please call the Meals on Wheels office before 12:00 noon the business day before. The meal delivery will be temporarily suspended and resumed when we are notified.

At times, you may not hear the door. If this happens and you find an ‘Attempted to Deliver’ tag left by the driver, please call the office at (201) 547-6809 immediately.

Cost

A donation of $1.25 for each meal is suggested to assist in providing meals to participants in need. Voluntary donations can be mailed or given to the driver in a sealed envelope. When possible, please enclose a check rather than cash and made payable to “City of Jersey City/Senior Nutrition”.

Please do not offer a tip, as drivers are not allowed to accept tips.

Emergency Preparation

Basic food supplies must be kept in your home at all times. You may not receive a meal as planned on any given day as meal deliveries can be suspended due to hazardous weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances. If uncertain whether a delivery will be made, please call Meals on Wheels at (201) 547-6809 between the hours of 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM Monday-Friday.
