Jersey City Receives NJDOT Award for Significant Street Safety Improvements & Successful Vision Zero Action Plan
Fulop Administration’s Equitable and Community-led Approaches to Increasing Public Safety Yields Life-Saving Results on City Streets
JERSEY CITY, NJ – Mayor Steven M. Fulop joins Jersey City’s Transportation Division in accepting the 2023 Complete Streets Excellence and Champion Award – an accolade from the Department of Transportation (NJDOT) in honor of the Fulop Administration’s successful Vision Zero Action Plan implementation, yielding life-saving and injury-preventing results on Jersey City roadways.
As cited during the Excellence Award presentation this week, Jersey City’s efforts achieved zero deaths on local roads in 2022 by quickly implementing proven safety countermeasures at high crash-risk locations. Under Vision Zero, the City continues to build a safer, more accessible, and more equitable transportation system for all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders of all ages and abilities.
“Jersey City is one of the busiest transportation hubs in the nation, and yet, we continue to raise the bar for creating safer streets and improving mobility, ” said Mayor Fulop. “We are grateful the State recognizes our innovative and equitable approaches to these impactful ground-level challenges that serve as a model for others to utilize.”
As the first in New Jersey to adopt Vision Zero, the NJDOT also highlights Jersey City’s progress on 50 out of the plan’s 77 action items. Since 2018, the City’s Transportation Division has implemented nearly 680 speed humps, over 190 No Turn on Red restrictions, added new curb extensions to over 100 intersections, and built over 20 miles of protected bike lanes.
“In Jersey City, we have among the highest transit ridership rates in the nation, with nearly half of all residents using public transit to commute to and from work each day. Our work is centered around a multimodal approach to transportation that improves safety for all roadway users with active mobility options, placemaking initiatives, and an efficient transit network that is easily accessible from all corners of the City,” said Barkha Patel, Director of the Department of Infrastructure.
Jersey City is one of only three New Jersey municipalities presented with the Complete Streets Excellence Awards.
“New Jersey has made significant progress in advancing Complete Streets from concept to policy to implementation,” NJDOT Commissioner Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti said. “We are thrilled to honor those who have worked tirelessly to ensure our roadways are safer for all who walk, roll, or ride.”
